WELCOME TO HYROS

With the heavy mood of the previous week still hanging over the CSS Eudora, it might be difficult to move on with business as usual, and that's okay. Loss is a completely natural part of life, and grief is always close behind. However, a few hours into a routine morning aboard the Eudora, a gentle tone fills the air, reverberating off of the walls of the Eudora herself. A synthetic voice fills the halls not long after: Entering planet atmosphere, gravity tethers engaging. Stabilizing descension rate. Stabilizing... stabilization complete.

Your third dropoff is about to get a little sandy. On the horizon, Planet Hyros rises. The observation deck allows everyone to watch the curve of the planet coming into view. The planet is covered in sand as far as the eyes can see, golden and shifting about like a sea itself. Great dunes swell upwards in great tsunami-like waves as small, sprawled oasis stud the surface, their trees reaching upwards, their clawed fronds of green struggling to reach the brilliant twin suns.

A message from the address seniorcrew@eudora.net pings you in the middle of whatever it is you happen to be doing at 1200 hours. If you're still somehow sleeping, that ping is definitely loud enough to cut through your sweetest dreams and to rouse you from sleep. There is no way to reply to it, so suffer as it opens itself up and reads:

Good morning, Junior Crew. We've received reports at 0200 hours of the appearance of void-like rifts appearing spontaneously throughout the Eudora. After significant exploration and through careful examination of these strange entities, we have come to the conclusion that these rifts pose no physical danger to the Eudora's Crew. Please proceed with caution, however, and do not hesitate to report to a Senior Crew member if any trouble arises. - Senior Crew

Following the ping is a notification coming from your I.R.I.S. indicating that there are a few new locations that have unlocked aboard the CSS Eudora and the enrichment concourse. If you have any questions or concerns, you'll find that your Senior Crew is available to take your meeting requests. Their callsigns are lit up at the bottom of your contacts list so text away.

With a new week, comes a new change of scenery. Characters will find a few supplies already in their locker to help in navigating the planet itself:

☀️ A "CHILLEST" branded bottle that carries 16 oz of water and keeps it cold for 48 hours
☀️ A long, UV-repelling scarf to wrap around your head and save you from the harsh rays in a variety of color options
☀️ "Slap 'Em" brand cold packs that can be adhered to any part of your body and are guaranteed to keep you cool in your travels.
☀️ An update to your I.R.I.S. that includes a way to measure the UV Index overhead. It includes alerts.

Hello, Junior Crew, and welcome to your week 3 mingle! Here are a few things to get you started:

⚠️ Upon waking this week, the crew of the Eudora will notice that the effects of the previous week have been replaced with new ones. Large slices of void have begun to appear spontaneously throughout the Eudora, drawing anyone within their vicinity inside with their gravitational pull. This void will only release you and whoever you are trapped inside with only once it has probed your minds, thus sharing some personal thoughts with whoever has been trapped with you. What is shared can range from a cryptic dream, a terrifying nightmare, or maybe even a memory.

Flavor aside, welcome to our unique take on an old favorite, which we simply are calling dreams and memories week. There are two ways that you may work with the effect this week:

Option A. Characters are pulled into a rift together and will be able to guide one another through a memory/dream/nightmare of theirs. Not unlikes a heartgame or a one-on-one CYOA, players may take turns guiding one another through their "scenarios" or they may mix their memories/dreams/nightmares as they see fit, offering a more participatory memshare experience.

Option B. Of course, you may also indulge in the classic memshare as well, where two or more people may get stuck in a rift together. This rift will pull directly from your deepest memories/dreams/nightmares, and will force-project them mentally into all parties' minds to bear witness with all senses.

As you may have gathered from the above, you are not limited to memories alone. Instead, you may choose to share a memory or a dream (either a pleasant one, or a nightmare). All sensations within the dream are felt by the parties bearing witness to it, but these will fade after an hour of exposure. You may share one-on-one or in a group, there is no limit to the amount of people who can be drawn inside of a single rift. This morning, all Junior Crew members will receive a ping that displays a little bar with individual dots. The second dot, aqua and labeled "ANORIA" is now grayed out with "COMPLETED" beneath it. The next dot, a gold one labeled "HYROS" is lit up. The notification beneath states FOUR DROP-OFFS UNTIL HUB DESTINATION REACHED. NO TELEPORTATION TECH DETECTED. Seems like this is a route tracker for you all, to anticipate your arrival to the Hub in the next few weeks.
Similarly to the previous week, there's going to be extra food left out in the mess hall along with the bland options. It's well seasoned and well made, etc. This will continue to Thursday.
Fresh lilies have been laid out on Sidon's, Ashe's, Sheba's and Shouxue's graves.
There's now a collection of desserts added to the meals in the mess hall. They will be freshly made for dinner and lunch.

TUESDAY

Access... granted! The locked door is now unlocked.
There is now a third pod in the medbay that is finally up and running for use.

THURSDAY

Wherever your character is, they will find that there is a ping from their I.R.I.S. alerting all Crew members of a scheduled jump, and detailing that to ensure safety and comfort tonight, to please observe a stay in place order on board the ship at 2300 hours ship time. They must remain on board the Eudora or the Concourse, but may stay in place in any of the locations there that they desire. The ping will remain as a rotating alert at the very top of most screens on board the Eudora. Please alert your mods in your curfew comment if your character will be trying to stay planetside instead... Thank you.

did you know that if you take a fluid dynamics class, your entire life becomes navier-stokes equations and realizing that the Immaculate Science that dudebros are so obsessed with still does not fully comprehend how something as basic and fundamental as fluids work (and may not even realize that fluids encompasses more than water but also air and anything that subscribes to 'flow') and therefore can in certain situations still only build reference materials off experimental data for thousands of college students to cry over. fluid dynamics is a fundamentally humbling lesson in the limitations of understanding the universe. a man reads a physics I textbook and believes he can fully predict the behavior of the universe and that love is chemicals, but engineering is realizing that the forces that drive this world are so infinitesimally small and invisible and become math more than logical reasoning and as such even randomness at the level of photons can make the world unknowable even as predictive modeling and computing become more and more powerful but only as clever as the humans who design it, as computation is not ingenuity. engineering is prying into the universe and glimpsing a fraction of its inner workings while gaining comprehension that even the most seemingly reliable mathematics can become a 'best guess' as soon as one crucial variable becomes nonlinear versus linear. it is seeing the unknowable mathematical magic of our world and attempting to make it our own, not using it to explain away the whimsy of our everyday experiences.

Upon waking up this morning, all crew members that were in the listed locations will find themselves expelled from and locked out of them. Any attempts to return to these locations will be barred by locked doors, although attempts to break back in aren't stopped by any means except perhaps an individual giving up on their efforts. The walls and floors outside these areas also appear to have been covered in a... fire-resistant shield? Watch your step, as they're a couple inches thick from their respective surfaces and the sudden lip created by going from an uncovered floor to a covered one might cause some accidents.

Attempts to contact the Senior Officers do go through, but responses may be limited or not come at all. The only guaranteed message in all of this is the one that fills every screen in the Eudora, and populates on your I.R.I.S. messages first thing this morning. Something's happened here, and you're left with very few answers.

anyway, this kid suddenly hanging around the ship can't be older than his early teens (he's still short for his age, which doesn't help); however, he's pretty identifiable by the fact he's got a very familiar bug arm. he's quiet, seemingly keeping to himself, and you're most likely to run into him on the tram, where he's just kind of... sitting there. looking out the windows, zoning out a little, if he's not looking uncertainly at anyone nearby. he quickly looks away if he's caught staring.]

WK 3 MINI-EVENT

Come Wednesday afternoon, a chorus of pings from I.R.I.S. will sweep through the Eudora - a message window pops up, unprompted, forcing users to read it before it can be dismissed and you can go about your business.

 

Let's get that bread, guys. If you get hungry or thirsty, there's some refreshments packed in the back of the pallet for you guys to eat while you're working. And if you run into any trouble, well, we've packed a few things for that as well. Keep an eye out for the dune beasts!

Today's drop off is for an emergency service for the Hyros traders and locals in general. The Eudora crew will find that upon making their way towards the indicated trading route to bring large hover palettes of packages, there is an enormous, gelatinous mess covering the canal that leads them towards the Ocean of Silk–having grown massive seemingly overnight? It goes without saying this waterway must be unclogged in order to get the palettes through. The blockage itself is viscous and gets on absolutely everything, staining it with an iridescent, translucent oily sheen.

A. ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICE

🪐 Cleaning up this mess is going to take everyone's effort. There's a great danger of falling over into more piles of this disgusting goop, so do take care to watch your step. Passages that were clear for you to traverse are completely blocked up. There are dangerous sinkholes that you might get trapped in, and even worse, there are some small, burrowing creatures that will attempt to incorporate you into their slippery, sticky nest, attempting to tie you down with threads made from eating the strangely toxic material. If you stay in these sinkholes too long, you may find your feet cementing to the ground, making it impossible to get out without someone else's help.

🪐 There are some native creatures that are covered in this goop. Thankfully you’re all equipped with the necessary cleaning gear to tackle this job (kits loaded on your palettes full of small, collapsible tubs, sponges cleaning solution, and fluffy towels.) Take some time to bathe the creatures in Twilight brand dish soap along the shore and set them free. (If you try to smuggle any of them on board the Eudora they will be returned immediately back outside, and in their place will be a stuffed animal version.)

B. CAN OF WORMS

🪐 Occasionally, there is a rumbling noise beneath your feet that undoes some of your work, sending a wave of goop heading straight for you and whoever else happens to be nearby. Some native dune worms begin to surface and with every breach and dive, send sand and goop aplenty toward the opening of the tunnel you just cleaned up, threatening to undo your hard work. They're very sensitive to sound, so perhaps you can use that to your advantage to draw them away or create a diversion?

🪐 However, as you're trying to handle the worms, there are some less-friendly denizens of the planet, those who live topside and make a living off of those who dare venture outside to cause a ruckus. Aiming to quite literally steal your stuff (off your bodies, off the palettes), it's time to fight off some dune pirates. They have grappling hook-like spears that they use to ride the dune worms around without consequence, making them rather deadly opponents. In among your supplies, however, as though packed in by guardian angels, you will fight high-power super-soaker-like devices that can be filled with Twilight soap and fired at high speed. Believe it or not... the worms really hate this. The pirates probably don't appreciate being made slippery either. It's Super Mario Sunshine time! (I guess you can have your own worm hooks to grab onto them for a ride and some plasma javelins as well for the weaponless. These, again, will be collected upon re-entry to the Eudora once the task is complete.)

WK 3 MINI-EVENT

A few hours after the first ping, a second ping reverberates throughout the Eudora, and another message window pops up, unprompted, forcing users to read it before it can be dismissed.

 

Is everyone alright? If you require assistance, please reach out to to any of your Senior Crew members stationed nearby. Fortunately you've been given a bonus for all your hard work, good work all of you. When you're done, pray take the opportunity to look around if you haven't already. You all deserve it.

METIS

After clearing up the tunnels and narrowly escaping being worm food, the crew will return to the Ocean of Silk, Hyros' bustling underground metropolis full of lavish market stalls and shops galore. The bazaar itself is dripping (literally) with silk overhead, the sheets of fabric billowing in jewel tones against the brilliant blue ferromagnetic ceramic sky.

A. DOOR DASH

🪐 Your I.R.I.S. pings suddenly to inform you of two things: one, you’ve recently been given a small monetary bonus! Two, you can gain another bonus by working Nut & Bolt's beta food delivery service. On your I.R.I.S., you’ll find a list of restaurants to pick up from and dishes you must deliver to a variety of customers. However there arise some issues...

1. Your delivery from Spice Cakes and Spirits requires a confirmation of receipt from the customer (AKA a signature), however, as you knock on the door, you will find that you are immediately greeted by an extremely volatile customer that will not give you their signature. That's how they get you! they say. First your signature, then your entire DNA! They bolt the fuck away. You have to get this signature one way or another or else the delivery will be incomplete... pursue!

2. A delivery from The Weathered Spoon is to be brought to an old woman who lives on the very edge of the Ocean of Silk, you have to trek a long way there through the busy streets, and the walk really isn't worth it for the tip your receive. Because it's in this planet's form of pennies. "One... two... three... fifteen... oh no, I've lost count!" If you try and deny the tip, her expression becomes extremely stormy, and she will try and chase you through the streets, tossing projectile "pennies" at mach fuck at you. And she has good aim. WHY CAN'T ANYONE HERE JUST PAY THROUGH TRANSFERRABLE CREDITS!? (Why's she so fucking fast, also? ... she's got four legs. Human legs. And she's getting closer.)

3. You are to deliver a very special meal from 17 Beans today - turns out the delivery is going straight to a very lucky birthday boy! However, you must perform an extravagant birthday song and dance upon delivery (it's on the receipt, a paid for service) So... get on that. Oh, and there are no instructions about what kind of dance you're to do so, guess you'll have to make that up on the spot!

B. BIZARRE BAZAAR

🪐 With the shopping out of the way, the Jr. Crew is permitted to have the run of the markets. With sizeable personal payment filling individual leather satchels, you may wander the marketplace and take in the sights. However, as you wander you might find your nose leading you to a corner of the bazaar where a perfume shop has been ransacked, leaving dozens of broken bottles everywhere. It’s impossible not to walk through at least one or two clouds of the spilled perfume as it rises in the heat. Good luck cleaning this up if you're feeling charitable, but know that if you aren't, well. This is going to be a problem for the rest of the day.

🪐 A potter’s stand is suddenly out of control, their pots coming to life with long, black spindly legs and skittering about. The potter begs you to get their pots back in one piece, but you dont have to listen to them if you don’t care about the property damage being placed on your bill. As you will discover, the pot creatures can leap very high and will try to skitter across buildings. Every time you aim to smash a pot, you will hear a familiar voice calling out from inside of it, begging you not to smash it. If you stick your hand inside, however, you will find yourself slowly being sucked in, so… better get some help with that.

C. BONUS: IN MEMORIAM

🪐 As you return to the Eudora, perhaps after washing off the remains of the very hard, hot day, you will find that at your lockers, there is a treasure trove of supplies - paint markers, pens, pencils, paper in all colors, patterns, and designs, fabrics, and decorative goodies, fake flowers, cute accessories like beads and garlands, round-tip scissors to cut paper, and adhesive. There is a small note laid atop the stack, indicating that these are... to decorate your lockers with. And more importantly, to decorate the lockers of the recently deceased. Consider it just another way of remembering the dead, a reprieve made of creativity, before you continue onwards.

[and out of the void stumbles arthur! hi. happy spa day.

stumbling is really the best word to describe it, because he looks extremely unsteady on his feet. this could be due to a few things: there's a deep gash over his legs, so that makes walking a little difficult. judging by the amount of blood covering him, though, he's probably lost a decent amount. there's a few other sources of all the blood that people can see. for one, he's got a wound in his gut that's still bleeding steadily, and a deep gash moving straight across his throat that's only slightly healed. that's probably why he looks dangerously pale as he staggers towards the door, holding onto someone. it's fine, he's got a good constitution score.

or maybe it's a little less than fine, because he loses his footing when he happens to be next to the hot springs and goes tumbling into the water. he tries to reach towards the person with him to stop his fall, but that's a little complicated since he's missing his right hand at the wrist. this is also bleeding fairly heavily. oops!

[ Anyone near cargo bay will find an indicator that a ship will be docking soon. Inside a section of the floor begins to open up to reveal what looks like a docking station. That's all that happens for a little while, before a gentle whirr can be heard coming in through the Hyros garage and then... into the open doors of the bay. It's a small craft with the Nut & Bolt Co. logo emblazoned on the side of it.

Out the ship doors are Amalthea and another three! They help their group out, but notifies a need for assistance. Hello, everyone... ]

[ nodd steps out next, wearing a fashionable suit of slate blue and white. the latter color may be hard to make out, much of it splashed red or faded to pink from blood. while there are tears on his sleeves, the fine white gloves ruined, nodd himself doesn't look terribly injured. he has new bruises along his jaw and what's visible of his throat from last he was seen, but they don't appear fresh, as if they'd been given a half-life to heal before the team returned. the vast majority of the new blood must not be his, since his scratches (and tears in the nice clothes) are few and surely shallow.

he hesitates, looking over his shoulder. all of his limbs are accounted for but it's not as if he went on an adventure all alone. ]

At around 2300 Hours / 11:00 PM on board the Eudora, wherever you happen to be at the moment, there is a synchronized pneumatic sigh that leaves every locking mechanism on the doorway of where you happen to be staying for the moment. Wherever you find yourself, be it reading in your bunk, playing games in the lounge, or even exploring the concourse late into the evening, consider yourself locked in wherever you happen to be for the night. No matter what you do, the doors will not budge. But the good news is that, until 1200 hours, your I.R.I.S. is in ONLINE MODE, so you do have an hour where you can text one another across the ship regardless of location!

Better get cozy for the evening. And don't mind the way the walls seem to close in around you as the hour draws near. Your I.R.I.S. pings off the top of the hour, putting I.R.I.S. messaging into OFFLINE MODE for the last half hour; then, at zero dark thirty, you'll find your eyelids becoming impossibly heavy. Wherever you are, standing, sitting, or already lying down, sleep comes to claim you and those around you, and the low droning of the Eudora around you becomes a thrumming lullaby, drawing you down into sleep.
